The study has gathered 100 postmenopausal women, which were divided into 4 groups: receiving citalopram, placebo, the combination of citalopram and hormone therapy, a combination of placebo and hormone therapy. Patients, who did not want to take HRT, were randomized to groups 1 and 2.
Patients, inadequately reacting to receive hormone therapy, were randomized to group 3 and 4. The initial dose of Celexa was 10mg/day in groups 1 and 3. A week later the dose was increased to 20mg/day. After initiation of therapy follow-up visits were conducted at 4 and 8 weeks. On the first and eighth weeks, the patient filled some good results.
Average number of hot flushes decreased in all groups and was 37% in group 1, 13% in group 2, 50% in group 3 and 14% in group 4. The number of complaints and psychosocial indicators on Cooperman index decreased also in all groups. Physical well-being has improved significantly in groups 1, 3 and 4. Declines were greatest in groups 1 and 3 compared with groups 2 and 4.
Generic Celexa is an effective alternative for patients unwilling to take hormone therapy to treat menopausal symptoms. Adjuvant therapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors improves the effectiveness of HRT in treating menopausal disorders in women, inadequate respondents on HRT.
